In den USA wurden lange die Diuretika als Antihypertensiva der ersten Wahl propagiert, wogegen in Europa mehrere Substanzgruppen als Alternativen für den Beginn der Therapie aufgelistet und den Therapeuten somit Wahlmöglichkeiten offeriert wurden. Nun nähern sich die Fachgesellschaften einander an.
