Abstract
Objective: In the context of a non-interventional study (NIS), effectiveness, tolerability and acceptance of a throat spray with 2.4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol, amylmetacresol and levomenthol (neo-angin® throat spray) were investigated in patients with uncomplicated pharyngitis.
Patients and methods: In 44 centres (ENT and general practitioners), 202 patients with uncomplicated pharyngitis were recruited, when treatment with the study medication was indicated according to the opinion of the attending physician. Primary target criteria were the assessment of the effectiveness and tolerability of the throat spray (physician and patient) as well as the documentation of any adverse drug reactions.
Results: In 95% of patients, the physicians assessed the effect of the study medication as being “very good” or “good”. The patients reported an onset of effect within five minutes on average and the effect lasting for about three hours, resulting on average in a noticeable improvement in the symptoms after two days. Tolerability was assessed to be “very good” or “good” in more than 97% (physicians) resp. 93% (patients). A total of 86% of patients would use the throat spray again. In particular, the patients liked the rapid effect, simple application and pleasant taste of the study medication.
Conclusions: In this NIS, the throat spray with 2.4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol, amylmetacresol and levomenthol appeared to be a well-tolerated therapeutic agent for the treatment of uncomplicated pharyngitis. It was very well accepted by patients and relieved therapeutically relevant symptoms.
