Die Global Eradication Initiative der WHO meldet einen großen Erfolg gegen die Kinderlähmung. Erstmals sind in afrikanischen Ländern innerhalb eines Jahres keine neuen Fälle mit Wildtyp-Viren aufgetreten. Allerdings gab es in Madagaskar neun und Nigeria eine Erkrankung durch Impfviren. Nigeria war das letzte Land in Afrika mit endemischer Polio-Verbreitung. Der Direktor der Initiative, Dr. Hamid Jafari, warnt jedoch vor allzu großer Freude. Zwar habe man die Kontrollmaßnahmen in Afrika deutlich verstärkt, es sei jedoch noch immer davon auszugehen, dass nicht alle Fälle erfasst würden.
