In die langfristige Betreuung von HIV-Patienten sollte immer auch ein Augenarzt eingebunden sein. Um opportunistische Infektionen des Auges aber auch ophthalmologische Folgen der HAART rechtzeitig zu erkennen, sind regelmäßige Kontrolluntersuchungen unabdingbar. Ansonsten drohen schwere Komplikationen, die bis zur Erblindung führen können.
