Auch wenn man den Mechanismus nicht verstand, war die Radiotherapie lange Zeit die antientzündliche Standardtherapie. Sie überzeugte allein durch ihre klinische Wirkung. Mit der Verbreitung von Antiphlogistika geriet sie allerdings — auch wegen möglicher Malignominduktion und allgemeiner Strahlenphobie — aus dem Blickfeld. Inzwischen hat die radioimmunologische Forschung einige zelluläre und molekulare Mechanismen aufgeklärt.
