Rupturen der Rotatorenmanschette zählen generell zu den häufigsten Verletzungen an der Schulter. Die Zahl der operativen Eingriffe ist in den vergangenen Jahren stetig angestiegen. Ursächlich sind überwiegend degenerative Veränderungen. Traumatische Risse der Rotatorenmanschette sind hingegen vergleichsweise selten und betreffen entweder jüngere Menschen oder ältere Menschen, zum Beispiel im Zusammenhang mit einer Schulterluxation, einem Sturz- oder einem Distorsionsereignis.
