Abstract
Iran is one of the most prominent emitters of carbon dioxide in the world, and the Iranian government intends to reduce the carbon footprint caused by energy consumption. In this regard, the main objective of this study is to estimate the carbon footprint of household electricity consumption in Iranian provinces. To achieve this objective, a two-step methodology was applied. In the first step, from 2012 to 2021, the carbon footprint of household electricity consumption was calculated in relation to the carbon footprint of the Iranian power generation grid. In the second step, the effects of the variables were analyzed using the stochastic impacts by regression on population, affluence, and technology model. These variables include the number of households in each province, the provincial income per household, the intensity of electricity consumption, the living area per household, and the share of days with temperatures over 25 °C. It was estimated that the average carbon footprint of household electricity consumption in Iranian provinces is 1.95 tons CO2/household. The results of this model show that the intensity of electricity consumption, the provincial income per household, and the share of days with temperatures over 25 °C have a positive influence on the carbon footprint of household electricity consumption. The use of efficient cooling systems, energy-efficient lighting, smart thermostats, electricity monitoring systems, building automation systems, off-grid electricity generation systems, and reforming electricity subsidies are vital policies and methods to reduce the carbon footprint of household electricity consumption.
