Abstract

Reservoirs and dams have complex local, regional, and global connections with the environment and climate. Dam construction and related hydropower development can trigger local and regional climate changes and significantly alter the availability of water resources. Simultaneously, climatic and environmental changes alter water cycle characteristics, thereby affecting the design and operation of reservoirs and dams and dictating the necessary properties of hydraulic construction materials. Based on existing studies and environmental and climate data, this study examined how environmental and climatic changes impact dam safety and proposed targeted measures to promote research on the role of reservoirs and dams in local and regional climates and as drivers and feedback mechanisms of climate change to ensure the sustainability of global dam and reservoir construction.
