Abstract

Disalicylaldehyde fumaroyldihydrazone (slfhH4) interacts with Mn(OAc)2·4H2O in presence of KOH in the methanolic medium giving [MnIV(slfh)(A)2]·2H2O and [MnIV(slfh)(NN)] (where A = H2O (1), pyridine (py), 2-picoline (2-pic), 3-picoline (3-pic), 4-picoline (4-pic), NN = 2, 2′-bipyridine, (bpy) and 1, 10- phenanthroline, (phen)). All the complexes are non-electrolytes. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, molecular mass determinations, molar conductance data, magnetic moment data, electronic, IR and EPR spectroscopic studies. Structural assessments of the complexes have been carried out based on magnetic moment, electronic, IR and EPR spectral data. The magnetic moment, electronic and electron paramagnetic resonance spectral studies correspond to Mn(IV) centre within a six-coordinate octahedral geometry around the manganese centre. The dihydrazone functions as a tetradentate ligand chelating the manganese(IV) ion present in octahedral geometry with anti-cis configuration in enol form. The cyclic voltammetric technique has been used for studying the electrochemical behaviour of the ligand and complexes thereof. The antibacterial activity of ligand and its complexes has been tested against Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus and Gram-negative bacteria, E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas vulgaris.
