Summary

(Pseudo)melanosis of the bladder

This case describes a rare abnormality of the bladder, defined as pseudomelanosis. During cystoscopy brown-black lines were noticed within the urothelium of the bladder. This may indicate melanosis or pseudomelanosis of the bladder, which is due to abnormal deposition of melanin containing pigment or pseudomelanin containing pigment in the urothelium. This is rare and remarkable since normal bladder urothelium does not contain melanocytes. Pseudomelanosis consists of melanin containing pigment or pigment combined with melanin, without the presence of melanocytes. In particular because of the absence of melanocytes, we consider pseudomelanosis te be a benign condition and not a precursor of malignant melanoma.
