Abstract

Selection of olive cultivars resistant to Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. savastanoi (Psav) is an important measure toward the management of olive knot disease. In this work, we report on the response of selected olive cultivars resistant to infection by Psav. Olive cuttings were regenerated from 142 unique accessions representing 91 cultivars of oil and table olives originated from 30 countries. The seedlings were inoculated using an exacto blade dipped in a liquid suspension of Psav (OD 0.2; ~ 1 × 108 CFU/ml) and maintained in the greenhouse for three months. Measurements of knot sizes showed variable response of the olive genotypes to bacterial inoculation. Based on knot size, olive accession Dole 23, genotype Souri from Ancient Palestine was the most tolerant to olive disease with smallest knot size (4.5 mm). The largest knot size (18.4 mm) was recorded on accession Dole 65, genotype Barnea from Israel. All olive subspecies did not differ significantly in their response to artificial inoculation with the P. savastanoi pv. savastanoi.
