I am pleased to announce that our long-time editorial board member, Professor Ian F.C. Smith has now moved on to Munich, where he is the Director of the Georg Nemetschek Institute AI for the Built World at the Technical University of Munich. Needless to say, that we miss him as the editorial board member of JCSHM, because his duties in his new position requires his full attention.

From 1982 to 2020, he was successively Research Associate, Scientific Adjoint for five years in the Computer Science Department, Assistant, Associate and Full Professor of Structural Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Waterloo in 1978 and his PhD from Cambridge University, UK in 1982. His research interests are in the intersections of computer science with structures and urban systems. Applications include advanced cyber-physical systems such as adaptive structures and sensed civil infrastructure. In 2003, he co-authored the textbook Fundamentals of Computer-Aided Engineering (Wiley) and the 2nd Edition, Engineering Informatics, which appeared in June 2013. In 2004, he was elected to the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences and in 2005, he received the Computing in Civil Engineering Award from the ASCE. From 2010 to 2020, he directed a second research group in Asia as Principal Investigator at the Singapore-ETH Future Cities Laboratory. He began his position at TU Munich in March 2022.

I am sure that Ian will be as productive and diligent in his new position as he has been at JCSHM. We will miss Ian’s special touch in handling the rigorous work of refereeing the peer reviews and processing the technical manuscripts. I found him candid with his assessments, thorough, and technically competent. We are happy with the success of one of our own, proud of his work, and thank him for being a great team player in making JCSHM a success.
