Flexural capacity of plate girders with very slender corrugated webs

Abstract

Corrugated web beams in industrial buildings commonly have a very slender web, which can induce a brittle vertical flange buckling. Full-scale corrugated web beams were tested, in order to verify the flexural capacity and the limit state of the vertical flange buckling of corrugated web beams with very slender webs. Flexural behavior and the effect of the residual stress were explored. All specimens failed due to vertical flange buckling after flange yielding at the mid-span of specimens. Corrugated web beams in the test had the flexural strength 6~17% larger than the flexural capacities from DASt-Ri 015. Based on the test results, a modified slenderness ratio limit, modified to 1.5 times that of the conventional value, was suggested. Numerical analysis with various parameters was performed to verify the accuracy of the modified slenderness ratio limit.
