Professor Masayasu Mimura, former Editor-in-Chief of Japan Journal of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, died on April 8th, 2021. He served as its Area editor in 1997–2009 and Editor-in-Chief in 2010–2015. He was a pioneer of application of mathematical analysis to real-world phenomena. With his wide range of knowledge and his far-reaching academic network, this journal obtained a truly international recognition. With deepest sorrow, I express our huge indebtedness to this great mathematician.
