Abstract

The Common adder, Vipera berus, was listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, due to habitat destruction, invasive plants, insecticide application, and road mortality. Here, we presented the complete mitochondrial genome of V. berus. The circular genome is 16,370 bp in length and contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes and two ribosome RNA genes. The overall nucleotide composition is 32.2% A, 27.1% T, 28% C, 12.6% G, with a total G + C content of 40.6%. The phylogenetic tree was constructed to explore the taxonomic status of V. berus, which contributes to phylogenetic studies of Viperinae and futher conservation strategies for this species.
