Isolation and characterization of polymorphic microsatellite loci in the mahseer Neolissochilus soroides (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) from Khao Soi Dao population in Thailand

Abstract

Habitat fragmentation and anthropogenic activities have caused changes to many fishes, such as Neolissochilus soroides in protected areas despite of its abundance. Therefore, it would be interesting to observe the changes in behavior and genetics of this species at fine scale. Quantification of genetic diversity in N. soroides using primers from related species was not successful. Therefore, new microsatellite loci were developed. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 3 to 17 with an average of 8.21 alleles per locus. Significant linkage disequilibrium was not observed. Deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium was observed at several loci, which coincided with the detection of recent bottleneck of this population.
