Abstract

The pearlite critical cooling rate (Vc) provides an important reference for formulating the slack quenching parameters of U75V rail. However, Vc is not a fixed value but changes depending on the contents of alloying elements. First, the effect of alloying elements on the Vc of U75V rail steel was studied. In addition, an exponential prediction model based on C, Mn, Si, and V elements was established and verified. Within the requirements of U75V rail-steel, Vc fluctuated in the range 6–9 °C/s upon changing the contents of alloying elements, and the threshold value of cooling rate of quenching was 6 ℃/s. The effect of alloying elements on Vc was Mn > Si > V > C. In production, incorporating the actual content of alloying elements into the model to obtain the predicted Vc and adjusting the cooling rate close to (not exceed) the predicted Vc, can obtain higher performance rails.
