Abstract
Although health has always been an important goal of physical education classes, the scientific evidence addressing health effects of school sport is limited. This article focusses on a description of physical education classes in Germany based on the representative MoMo study as well as an analysis of the relationship between health outcomes of children and adolescents and the characteristics of school sport. The analysis included 2282 individuals aged 7–17 years. Data about physical activity and sports, health, anthropometric measures and motor performance were collected. Health outcomes include general health status, cardiovascular disease, and reduced motor performance. The average number of physical education classes per week was 2.6 (±0.9 standard deviation) classes with 45 min each. Overall, pupils assessed the physical education classes as predominantly positive. Two fields of the content-related design of physical education classes were criticized more frequently than the others: 33% of the pupils reported intensities were too low and 44% reported a lack of difficulty. By regression analysis, the physical education-related variables were tested for their predictability of health. Within these variables, the grades and interest are most important for the general state of health. The predictive power of school sport variables on cardiovascular risk and reduced motor performance is weak. The results indicate that there is not a strong link between the characteristics of physical education classes and students’ health. In order to exploit the health potential, efforts to improve the quality and quantity of physical education classes should be further developed.
