Abstract
The public usually associates sport with a number of positive outcomes, and as a consequence, sport faces high expectations regarding its prevention potential. Yet, research results concerning the prevention of substance abuse by adolescents are inconclusive and suggest that sport may not meet the expectations. To get a differentiated picture of the relationship between sport participation and substance abuse by adolescents and to assess the impact of different settings a large Swiss survey on sport participation included a number of questions regarding substance abuse. The study results confirm earlier research that showed a tendency of adolescents engaging in sport to drink more alcoholic beverages and to use more smokeless tobacco. Group processes and sport club membership are important explanatory variables for problematic drinking habits of adolescents. Conversely, the use of smokeless tobacco does not appear to be a problem of sport in general and sport clubs but rather occurs only in a number of specific sports. In addition, there is evidence that sport has a preventive effect with respect to smoking tobacco or using cannabis. Yet, our results suggest that this effect only occurs beyond a certain threshold value, i. e. only sport participation of at least four hours per week is correlated with a decreased consumption of tobacco (smoking) and cannabis.
