Nahrungsergänzungsmittel sind Produkte zur erhöhten Versorgung des menschlichen Stoffwechsels mit bestimmten Nähr- oder Wirkstoffen im Grenzbereich zwischen Arzneimitteln und Lebensmitteln. Die moderne Ernährungswissenschaft beschäftigt sich zunehmend mit der Untersuchung spezifischer Nahrungsmittel, welche zusätzlich zu ihren nährenden Eigenschaften Körperfunktionen günstig beeinflussen sollen.
