Abstract

Vitamin D deficiency affects the majority of elderly people. Numerous interventional studies are now available to highlight the benefit of correcting this deficit to reduce the risk of fractures and falls. Furthermore, observational studies describe the link between vitamin D plasma concentrations, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, cognitive issues and mortality. The aim of this literature review is to clarify the factual data regarding the benefit of vitamin D supplements in the elderly living at home or in residential facilities and to summarise the national and international guidelines on this subject.
