1 Special Focus

The BISE journal publishes research that examines problems in the design, implementation, and management of information systems as well as their impact on individuals, organizations, industries, or society. The journal also seeks to advance knowledge about the effective and efficient utilization of information technology and computation for the improvement of welfare.

Many new research topics have emerged, which are likely to become very influential in our research community and in business and today’s information society in general. The goal of this special focus issue is to publish forward-looking research commentaries on important topics and phenomena that are likely to frame or expand an important research agenda in the next few years. This special focus was initiated by the Section “Information Systems” (Wirtschaftsinformatik, WKWI) in the German Academic Association for Business Research and the Special Interest Group “Business Informatics” (GI-FB WI) of the Gesellschaft für Informatik e. V. to foster a discussion in the BISE community on emerging research areas. The paper should explicitly address the following aspects of a research agenda:

  1. 1.

Relevance and timeliness of the topic for Business and Information Systems Engineering

  2. 2.

    Problem description and research challenges

  3. 3.

Scientific methods relevant to solve the problem

  4. 4.

Relevant academic disciplines and possible interdisciplinary cooperation required

  5. 5.

    Examples of initial results

The research topics should be beyond what a single paper or a single author can achieve and require the effort of a larger community of researchers. We explicitly encourage joint proposals of interdisciplinary teams of authors.

2 Submission

The special focus editors will organize the review process and solicit reviews from a group of distinguished national and international researchers. All papers will be reviewed anonymously (double-blind process) with regard to the above mentioned criteria.

Papers in this special issue shall be shorter than full research papers and should not exceed 25,000 characters including spaces, minus 5,000 characters per page for illustrations. In addition, we ask for a 1-page abstract (3,000 characters), which summarizes the text and explicitly addresses the 5 aspects of the research agenda mentioned above.

Interested authors are encouraged to submit an initial version of the 1-page abstract by December 15, 2012 via e-mail to bise@in.tum.de. The special issue editors will then provide feedback to the authors. Full papers should then be submitted by 2013-03-01 at the latest via the journal’s online submission system (http://www.editorialmanager.com/buis/) to the special issue “BISE Research Areas”. Please observe the instructions regarding the format and size of contributions to Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE)/WIRTSCHAFTSINFORMATIK. Detailed authors’ guidelines on the formatting of the paper can be downloaded from http://www.bise-journal.org.
