Abstract

This paper implements a Mach–Zehnder modulator and electro-absorption modulator-based radio-over-fibre architectures utilising different types of fibres used in the link. By optimising the parameters of the implemented network, a 1-GHz signal is transmitted over the network with different configurations and the comparative analysis based on the bit error rate of the network is completed by modifying the various parameters of the networks which include fibre length, attenuation, channel characteristics, etc. The results show that the Q factor obtained for free space optics is higher and it indicates that an improved performance over conventional fibre channel is obtained. However, it limits the length up to which optimum signal transmission can be achieved, making it suitable to be implemented in future wireless applications.
