Studies of the Earth’s Magnetic Field from Peninsular India: Contributions from CSIR-NGRI

  • Published:
Journal of the Geological Society of India

Abstract

Studies of the geomagnetic field and paleomagnetic phenomena were among the earliest disciplines of geophysics, which were launched in CSIR-NGRI since the early 1960s. Many firsts in the country as well as in international scenario have been achieved. These disciplines continue to grow within the Institute, poised to take up new dimensions of research, which will contribute not only to fundamental science but also to applications for space weather hazards and environmental magnetism. This article attempts to summarise the history of development of geomagnetic and paleomagnetic research carried out in peninsular India by CSIR-NGRI over the last sixty years and highlight salient results of the last decade.
