Anal sac of a cladid crinoid from Permo-Carboniferous Talchir Formation, Talchir basin, Odisha

Abstract

A calcareous anal sac of a probable cladid crinoid, referable to Cyathocrinitacea family is reported for the first time from late Carboniferous-early Permian siliciclastics of Talchir basin, Angul district, Odisha. A cladid affinity for this crinoid specimen is confirmed from tubular, anteriorly tapered anal sac with slightly alternating, multiple rows of calcified plates, hexagonal or modified hexagonal, pentagonal and polygonal plate sutures with pitted plate surface. Generic identification is not attempted due to the incomplete preservation of the specimen. The preservation of this exclusive marine organism in the fine siliciclastics attests to a marine depositional milieu.
