After his habilitation in 1980 he became head of the Department of Oral Surgery (University Dental Clinic, Vienna Medical University, Austria) and in 1987 head of the Dental Clinic. From 1983 to 1993 he was editor of the journal Stomatologie, president of the Austrian Society for Oral Surgery and Implantology (1983–2002) and president of the Austrian Dental Association (1989–1993). He is a founding member of the scientific board of the Osteology Foundation in 2004 and became associate editor for the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants (JOMI) in 2006.
