Abstract

This paper focuses on the geochemistry of scandium (Sc) and major element oxides in coals from the Kerman coal field in southern Iran. A total 118 coal and non-coal rock samples from four main coal deposits in this basin (Hamkar, Hashuni, Hojedk, and Pabdana coal deposits) were sampled and analyzed. The ash yields of Triassic–Jurassic Kerman coals greatly varied. In general, Sc enrichment is observed in the collected samples and its average concentration is higher than that of world coals. Scandium is often concentrated at the margins (upper and lower parts) of a coal seam. The concentration of Sc in non-coal rocks with a low coefficient of variation is higher than that of coals. There is a positive correlation between the Sc content of coal and the ash yield. The terrigenous material carried into the peat deposit is the major factor for the anomalous Sc enrichment in coal sublayers of a coal seam.
