Abstract

This research aims at determining an optimal routing of household waste collection in El Bousten district in Sfax Tunisia using Geographical Information System (GIS) technology. The Network Analyst tool in ArcGIS-based model was applied to improve collection efficiency through collection bin reallocation and vehicle tour optimization in terms of distance or time. Crucial setting parameters, namely the density of the city-population, generation rate of waste, location of bins, road network and traffic/circulation, and the capacity of the collection vehicles, were considered. Two scenarios have been examined: S1, collection vehicle routing optimization; S2, bins’ reallocation as well as routing optimization process. The results showed that, compared to the current situation, both scenarios guarantee savings in terms of collection time (6.94% and 13.88% for S1 and S2 respectively) or travel distance (4.19%and 14.68% for S1 and S2 respectively). Therefore, the direct effect of such savings can be translated into an expected saving of fuel consumption of 8.45% and 21.12% for S1 and S2, respectively, without forgetting the positive impact related to CO2 emissions. The routing optimization process contributes to an expected benefit of 10.11% of total cost.
