De rol van studieloopbaanbegeleiders bij de ziekteverzuimbegeleiding van leerlingen op het middelbaar beroepsonderwijs

Samenvatting

Introductie

Omvangrijk schoolverzuim kan leiden tot uitstroom naar een lager onderwijsniveau of voortijdig schoolverlaten. Beiden hangen sterk samen met gezondheidsproblemen en hogere sterftecijfers. In het huidige onderzoek werd nagegaan hoe studieloopbaanbegeleiders (slb’ers) de begeleiding bij ziekteverzuim van mbo’ers inhoud en vorm geven en waarom ze dat zo doen.

Methode

Kwalitatief onderzoek met semigestructureerde interviews, afgenomen bij elf slb’ers werkzaam op drie MBO-scholen in West-Brabant.

Resultaten

Volgens slb’ers zijn er drie vormen van ziekteverzuim: verzuim vanwege ziekte, vanwege psychosociale problemen en vanwege ‘niet naar school willen komen’. In de verzuimbegeleiding hanteren slb’ers drie soorten rollen: een controlerende, een structurerende en een empathische rol. Omdat er volgens de slb’ers vaak sprake is van ziekteverzuim vanwege ‘niet naar school willen komen’, wat ze niet legitiem verzuim vinden, hanteren ze vooral een controlerende rol, terwijl ze met deze rol weinig affiniteit hebben. De slb’ers benoemen de randvoorwaarden die volgens hen nodig zijn om de rollen bij ziekteverzuimbegeleiding goed in te kunnen vullen. Deze randvoorwaarden zijn niet specifiek voor bepaalde rollen.

Conclusies

Hoewel slb’ers in hun visie op ziekteverzuim onderscheid maken in drie vormen van ziekteverzuim, blijken ze in hun werkwijze vooral onderscheid te maken tussen legitiem en niet legitiem verzuim. Door deze focus op legitimiteit hanteren ze vooral een controlerende rol. Ze voelen zich echter niet prettig bij deze rol en nemen liever een structurerende of een empathische rol op zich. Hierdoor ervaren slb’ers ziekteverzuimbegeleiding als een ambigue taak.

Abstract

The role of career guidance teachers in the guidance of intermediate vocational students with medical absenteeism

Background

Extensive school absenteeism may cause a decrease in level of education or even school dropout. Both are strongly associated with health problems and higher mortality. This study explores how Dutch career guidance teachers provide guidance and support to students in intermediate vocational education in cases of medical absenteeism and why they’re doing it that way.

Method

A qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews, conducted with 11 career guidance teachers working in three intermediate vocational education schools in West-Brabant.

Results

According to career guidance teachers there are three kinds of medical absenteeism: absenteeism due to illness; absenteeism due to psychosocial problems; and absenteeism because students do not feel for coming to school. Career guidance teachers distinguish three roles in guidance of students with medical absenteeism: a controlling, a structuring and an empathic role. They are convinced that medical absenteeism is often due to "not feeling for coming to school". Because they consider this kind of absenteeism as illegitimate, they primarily adopt a controlling role, although they have little affinity with it. Career guidance teachers mention preconditions needed to carry out their roles in medical absence guidance. These preconditions are not specific to certain roles.

Conclusion

Although, when viewing students’ medical absenteeism, career guidance teachers distinguish three kinds of medical absence, they seem to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate absence when carrying out the procedure on medical absenteeism. Because of this focus on legitimacy they mainly adopt a controlling role. However, they do not feel comfortable with this role and prefer to adopt a structuring or empathic role. Because of this career guidance teachers experience guiding medical absenteeism as an ambiguous task.
