Onterechte zelfverwijzers op de SEH terugdringen

Veel patiënten bezoeken de spoedeisende hulp (SEH) zonder verwijzing door een zorgverlener. Volgens zorgverleners is hun bezoek vaak ten onrechte. Deze zelfverwijzers hadden volgens hen met hun klacht naar de huisartsenpost (HAP) of de eigen huisarts moeten gaan. De onterechte zelfverwijzers doen een onnodig beroep op relatief dure zorg, waardoor mensen die terecht naar de SEH gaan mogelijk onacceptabel lang moeten wachten. In dit artikel staat de vraag centraal hoe het aantal onterechte zelfverwijzers op SEH teruggedrongen kan worden.

Abstract

Triage as a solution to reduce the number of unjustified self referred patients at the emergency department

Many patients visit the Emergency Department (ED) without being referred by a health care provider. According to the employees at the ED most of these visits are unjustified, since these patients had to go to a General Practitioner. Research of NIVEL shows that most self-reffered patients themselves judge their ED visit as justified. For patients it is not always clear where they should go with their health complaint. Therefore it would be better that health care providers make this decision. This can be done using a triage system. Our study shows that people have confidence in such a triage system.
