Abstract
Live a healthy life and feel the benefits: Predictors of perceived health among Dutch youth
This study examines to what extent perceived health among Dutch youth (11-16 years) is predicted by their food- and exercise behaviour. It was analysed whether Body Mass Index and body image are related to perceived health among adolescents, and whether this differs for boys and girls. Data from the cross-sectional Dutch Health Behaviour in School aged Children study (N=4786) were employed to examine this issue. Results showed that adolescents rate themselves to be healthier when they eat fruit and vegetables, have breakfast regularly and get enough exercise. These relationships are the same for boys and girls, and remain significant after controlling for overweight, body image and a number of sociodemographic variables (educational level, family affluence, ethnicity). Drinking soda, and eating candy, snacks and pretzels appear not to be related to perceived health. Interventions to change unhealthy lifestyles in adolescence will be most effective when they are not aimed at discouraging unhealthy food, but instead focus on encouraging exercise, having breakfast and eating fruits and vegetables.
