GVO op zijn Frans

Vijftig jaar gezondheidslichting en -opvoeding (GVO) in Nederland roept de vraag op hoe dat elders in Europa was.¹,² De Nederlandse GVO was (en is vaak) sterk ingebed in en gedomineerd door de Angelsaksische benadering van gezondheidsbevordering, waarin Engeland, het Engelstalige deel van Canada en de VS een hoofdrol spelen. De referenties in eerdere historische overzichten in TSG maken dat overduidelijk.¹,² In Frankrijk, delen van Zwitserland, Franstalige Canada en Wallonië had de ontwikkeling van GVO een eigen karakter, waar we door de taalbarrie` re vaak weinig vanaf weten. En omgekeerd geldt dit ook voor de ‘pays l’ espace franco phone’ die vaak minder de Angelsaksische bronnen willen of kunnen raadplegen.

Health promotion and patient education in francophone countries

Health promotion exists 40 years in the Netherlands. The history was strongly influenced by the pragmatic Anglo-Saxon health science. The development in francophone countries was (and is still) different, like in France, Wallonia, and French speaking parts of Switzerland and Canada. These differences are not only caused by language barriers, but also by the different health care systems, the dominant role of physicians, and the tendency to discuss health education more from fundamental, philosophical and ethical principles. This is illustrated by the development of therapeutic patient education in Switzerland, the patient education in Wallonia and the French speaking part of Canada, and the recent developments in the health promotion in France. The existing differences should be more appreciated on both side of the spectrum in health promotion and patient education.
