Online video gameverslaving: verkenning van een nieuw fenomeen

Steeds vaker spelen Nederlandse jongeren samen met anderen videogames over het internet. Dit is niet altijd zonder risico’s: 3% van de online gamers kan namelijk gezien worden als ‘gameverslaafd’. Ze kunnen er moeilijk mee stoppen, spelen meer dan ze van plan waren, slapen te weinig door het gamen, denken dat ze eigenlijk minder zouden moeten gamen en hun huiswerk lijdt eronder. Vertaald naar alle jongeren gaat het om 1,5% van alle Nederlandse adolescenten tussen de 13 tot en met 16 jaar of 12.000 jongeren. Op basis van deze bevindingen werd een nieuwe vragenlijst ontwikkeld voor het meten van gameverslaving, deVideo game Addiction Test (VAT). De VAT omvat de elementen controleverlies, conflicten, overmatige aandacht, stemmingsbeïnvloeding en onthoudingsverschijnselen. Videogameverslaving hangt samen met verschillende negatieve verschijnselen zoals depressie, eenzaamheid, sociale angst en een meer negatief zelfbeeld. Maar het lijkt er ook op dat het hebben van goede vriendschappen – zowel online als in het echt – mogelijk een beschermende werking heeft.

Abstract

Online video game addiction: exploration of a new phenomena

Dutch adolescents are increasingly playing video games over the internet. This is not without risks: 3% of online gamers can be viewed as ‘game addicted’. They have a hard time quitting, play more than intended, do not get enough sleep, think they should game less, and do not spend enough time on homework. Translated to all Dutch adolescents this indicates that approximately 1.5% of Dutch adolescents in the ages 13 through 16, or 12.000 adolescents, have trouble controlling their online video gaming. We developed a questionnaire to measure videogame addiction. TheVideo game Addiction Test (VAT) comprises loss of control, conflict, preoccupation, mood modification, and withdrawal symptoms. Video game addiction is associated with depression, loneliness, social anxiety, and negative self-esteem. On the other hand, our research shows that having good friendships - online or offline - might play a protective role.
