50 jaar GVO en Gezondheidsbevordering

Samenvatting

De afgelopen vijftig jaar was ‘Seksuele Voorlichting’ een belangrijk thema van de Gezondheidsvoorlichting en Opvoeding. In zowel vorm als inhoud succesvol en opvallend. Dat komt door in ieder geval drie ingrijpende sociale veranderingen in de jaren zeventig en tachtig van de vorige eeuw: (1) De introductie van de anticonceptiepil, die seksualiteit van een problematische reproductiefunctie veranderde in een kans op ontplooiing van een wezenlijke individuele en sociale behoefte van mannen en vrouwen; (2) de emancipatiebewegingen, die erkenning eisten van mannen en vrouwen als seksuele wezens en dat vertaalden in politieke- en machtsverhoudingen; (3) de communicatierevolutie, die evolueerde van eenzijdige, omfloerste overdracht van kennis en vooral van normen, naar interactieve dialoog tussen mensen over ongeveer alles wat te weten, te ervaren, te zien en te voelen is op het gebied van seksuele relaties. Geholpen door een technologische revolutie in communicatiemiddelen. Op de golven van de seksualisering van de samenleving heeft het vak seksuele voorlichting zich professioneel en effectief ontwikkeld. Misschien wel omdat seksualiteit in al haar facetten bespreekbaar werd in een revolutionaire uitbarsting eind jaren zestig. Van taboe onderwerp via (h)erkenning van de vele individuele en sociale facetten ervan tot aanmoediging te genieten van seksualiteit. Voorwaarden om te kunnen genieten zijn: veilig vrijen en respect voor de ander. De gezondheidswetenschappen, psychologie, sociologie, opvoedingswetenschap en communicatiewetenschap schraagden samen de activiteiten van de seksuele voorlichters. Ook toen de euforie na de revolutie doofde in een explosie van soa/aids en misbruik in veilig geachte intieme instituties, hebben seksuele voorlichters overtuigend en professioneel de positieve kracht van seksualiteit in onze samenleving over het voetlicht gebracht in een scala aan interactieve communicatieve uitingen.

Abstract

Fifty years sex education and sexual health promotion in the Netherlands Three revolutionary social changes influenced the content and form of sex education and sexual health promotion in the Netherlands over the past fifty years: (1) The introduction of The Pill. Since then sexuality was no longer a problematic human reproductive function, but a chance for development of an essential individual and social need. (2) The movement for emancipation of both the individual and social personality aspects. Men and women are sexual beings with an equal right to fulfill their needs in respect for each other. (3)The communication revolution. From “one way” knowledge transfer to interactive dialogue. From vague metaphores to direct words and images showing sexual behaviour and emotions. Sexual health promotion and education has evoluated to a high professional standard on the waves of the sexual revolution since the sixties and the scientific support of sociology, psychology, educationscience, social sexology. Even in the hangover period after the revolution, when AIDS and sexual abuse became the dominant topics, sex education convinced with their positive attitude towards the power of sexual relations. Nowadays, in the Netherlands, there is a range of effective educational activities, that support the high sexual public health status here.
