Abstract
Evaluation of the ‘Gezonde School Methode’ on primary schools in Brabant
Schools are often overwhelmed by an unstructured and scattered offer of health promoting activities. Therefore, current school health policy is highly fragmented and supply- driven, being characterized by ad-hoc activities. To assist schools, the Regional Public Health Service ‘GGD Hart voor Brabant’ uses a demand-driven program called ‘De Gezonde en Veilige School’ method (Healthy and Safe School) specifying different steps towards structural school health policy (based on the national ‘Healthy School Method’). They are the first region which implement this kind of school health policy in a comprehensive way in primary schools. The aim of this study was to investigate to what extent the participating primary schools are satisfied with the method and to what extent the method contributes to the intention to create a school health policy. An electronic questionnaire was developed and distributed to primary school directors. The majority is satisfied with the method. Many health promotion activities are implemented conform the school health plan. Yet, schools often do not perform each step of the program completely. Also, schools implement a lot of health promotion activities on top of the method. A strong correlation was found between satisfaction with the priority workshop (one of the steps) and overall satisfaction. Despite a lot of health promotion activities taking place at primary schools, it can be concluded that the activities are not (yet) structurally embedded in a school health policy. Several recommendations are given which can optimize the method.
