‘Alcohol een ander verhaal’, een gecontroleerde effectevaluatie op de basisschool

In dit artikel wordt het effect beschreven van alcoholvoorlichting met behulp van het lespakket ‘Alcohol een ander verhaal’ op leerlingen van groep acht in het basisonderwijs in West-Friesland. Aan het vergelijkend onderzoek met een quasiexperimenteel design hebben negen experimentele scholen, met 209 leerlingen, en acht controlescholen, met 169 leerlingen, deelgenomen. Gegevens zijn verzameld met vragenlijsten die door de leerlingen tweemaal, met een interval van drie tot vier weken, in de klas zijn ingevuld. ‘Alcohol een ander verhaal’ leidt tot meer kennis over alcohol, de gevolgen van alcoholgebruik en de specifieke gevolgen ervan bij jongeren. Ook hebben leerlingen als gevolg van het project vaker een gesprek en een afspraak met hun ouders over de leeftijd waarop ze mogen gaan drinken. Voor attitude ten aanzien van alcoholgebruik door jongeren werd een klein maar ongunstig significant effect gevonden. Er kon geen significant effect worden aangetoond op de subjectieve norm van ouders en van vrienden, op self-efficacy en op de intentie om op de korte termijn geen alcohol te gaan drinken.

Abstract

‘Alcohol een ander verhaal’: effect evaluation of an alcohol prevention project for primary schools

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of the alcohol prevention project ‘Alcohol een ander verhaal’ (Alcohol an other story) implemented in the highest classes of primary schools in the West-Friesland area. A quasi-experimental study design was used in which 209 pupils of nine schools were compared with 169 pupils of eight control schools. Data was collected in the classroom by means of written questionnaires. The interval between baseline and post-test questionnaires was three to four weeks. Multilevel mixed regression analyses revealed beneficial effects on knowledge of the risks of alcohol use at a young age, on the percentage of children who communicate about alcohol use with their parents and on the percentage of children whose parents set rules about the age at which children start drinking. The effect on the attitude towards drinking alcohol was statistically significant, though very small, in an undesirable direction. There were no changes found in self-efficacy, social impact and intention not to drink alcohol in the near future.

‘Alcohol een ander verhaal’ is a good first step as part of a prevention programme intended to delay the initiation of adolescent alcohol use. The small unwanted effect on attitude asks for attention and special methods within the programme to strengthen existing favourable attitudes.
