Alcohol prevention in adolescents: parents and school together make the difference

Resumen

Het drinken van alcohol op jonge leeftijd brengt verschillende risico’s met zich mee voor onder andere de schoolprestaties en de hersenontwikkeling. Onderzoek naar de effecten van de nieuwe interventie Preventie Alcoholgebruik Scholieren (PAS) laat zien dat als ouders en jongeren worden betrokken in preventie, het beginnen met (zwaar) wekelijks drinken bij een deel van de jongeren uitgesteld kan worden. PAS is onderdeel van De Gezonde School en Genotmiddelen en is gericht op leerlingen in klas 1 t/m 3 van het voortgezet onderwijs en hun ouders. In dit artikel wordt beschreven hoe ouders betrokken worden bij het alcoholpreventieprogramma voor scholieren. Daarnaast wordt onderbouwing gegeven aan de nieuwe e-learning module van De Gezonde School en Genotmiddelen.

Abstract

The use of alcohol is inclined with several risks with respect to academic performance and the development of the brain. A recent study showed that the new program ’Prevention of Alcohol use in Scholars’ (PAS) effectively postponed the onset of (heavy) weekly drinking in 10% of the adolescents when adolescents as well as their parents were targeted. PAS is part of the drug prevention program ’Healthy School and Drugs’ (HSD) and targets adolescents in class 1 to 3 in high school (age 12 to 15) and their parents. This article describes how parents can be involved in alcohol prevention and provides an underpinning of the use of e-learning in HSD.
