Samenvatting
Achtergrond
Abstract
Background
During fluoroscopy-assisted orthopaedic trauma procedures, miscommunication about the positioning of the C-arm are frequently leading to disturbed teamwork, unnecessary radiation exposure, and procedural delays.
Objective
To design and test a uniform communication language for use in fluoroscopy-assisted orthopaedic trauma procedures.
Methods
Questionnaires were sent to trauma and orthopaedic surgeons and radiographers in our Level 1 Trauma Center to evaluate the currently used terminology. Based on the answers provided, input of an expert panel was used to create a clear and uniform set of commands. Additionally, the potential benefit of implementation of this terminology was explored in an experimental setting.
Results
There was a tremendous diversity in the currently used terminology. Use of the newly designed terminology showed a reduction of procedural time and amount of images needed.
Conclusion
There is a need for uniform terminology during fluoroscopy assisted orthopaedic trauma surgery. Our first standardized Dutch language terminology can reduce the total fluoroscopy time, the amount of images acquired and potentially reduce the overall radiation exposure.
