Abstract
Late pericardial tamponade is rare. In this case we present a patient who presented to our emergency department with secondary pericardial tamponade one week after a self inflicted penetrating chest injury to the left thorax. The surgical technique using the subxyphoid window is described. Current literature suggests to repeatedly perform an echocardiography during admission of patients following a penetrating thoracic injury for early detection of secondary pericardial injury.
