Samenvatting

Bilaterale fracturen van de eerste rib worden weinig gezien. In deze casus presenteren wij een man die bilateraal de eerste twee ribben had gebroken na een val van een trap. Uit de literatuur blijkt dat bilaterale fracturen van de eerste rib zelden voorkomen. Bilaterale fracturen van rib 1 en 2 zijn nog niet eerder beschreven.

De anatomie en de relevante pathofysiologie van fracturen van de eerste rib worden besproken. Fracturen van de eerste rib worden beschouwd als een aanwijzing voor ernstig thoraxtrauma. Daarom wordt geadviseerd laagdrempelig aanvullend onderzoek te verrichten.

Aanvullend onderzoek naar neurovasculaire schade dient alleen op indicatie plaats te vinden

Abstract

Bilateral fractures of the first rib are unusual. In this report we discuss a case of a patient with bilateral fractures of the first two ribs after he had fallen from the stairs. Literature research revealed that bilateral fracture of the first rib is uncommon. Bilateral fractures of the first two ribs were, to our knowledge, never described before. In this article we discuss the anatomy and pathofysiology of fractures of the first rib. Fractures of the first rib are considered as a harbinger for severe intrathoracic trauma, therefore it is recommended to perform additional investigations to determine the extent of the trauma. Investigations to exclude neurovascular trauma are only recommended if there is any clinical suspicion.
