Abstract
In a dual-process model, addiction is characterized by an imbalance between a hypersensitive impulsive system and a suboptimally operating reflective system, whereby automatic impulsive reactions are difficult to be kept under control. Even when patients are familiar with the negative consequences of their addiction and even when they are fully prepared to stop their substance abuse, in clinical practice we observe that these rational considerations are often not sufficient to prevent patients from using substances. This reasoning led to the introduction of a new module into the therapy program of Alexianen Zorggroep Tienen: R-Impulse (Regulation of Impulses). This therapy module was developed by the psychologist and the activities therapist, who jointly give the therapy sessions. The objective, through experience-oriented exercises on the one hand, is to make patients aware of the automatic processes that play a part in substance abuse, and, through groupdiscussions on the other hand, to make the link with their substance dependence in their day-to-day life. Research must determine whether these sessions have a psycho-educative value, as well as a positive effect on outcome.
Notes
