Summary
Bieleman et al. (2011) have investigated the nature and extent of participation in gambling and gambling addiction in the Netherlands, but they have not addressed problem gamblers explicitly in their reporting. This article presents the results of additional analyses on problem gamblers and compares the characteristics of problem gamblers with the characteristics of recreational gamblers and risk gamblers. The additional analyses show that problem gamblers are mainly men of about 40 years old, half of whom belongs to the age group 30–55 years. They spend most money on playing gaming machines in amusement arcades. The main reasons for them to gamble are the wish to quickly earn money and the urge to play. Problem gamblers clearly differ from risk gamblers and recreational gamblers in their (playing) behavior and characteristics. For example, in general, problem gamblers are younger, they have started playing games of chance at a younger age, they live alone more often and they are into debt more often. Approximately two-thirds of the problem gamblers consider themselves addicted to gambling. In addition, nearly two-fifths indicate that they sometimes have problems with gambling, but do not consider it necessary to look for help.
