Summary
GHB-epidemiology in the Netherlands and Flanders
Tibor Brunt & Jochen Schrooten
The prevalence of GHB use in Flanders and the Netherlands among the general population is relatively low, but problematic GHB use has increased, as evidenced by the Dutch figures of addiction and emergency first aid. The extent of use in the Netherlands and Flanders is examined on the basis of prevalence among the general population to the group of clubbers. In addition, the epidemiology of addiction is described. Studies from both countries have shown some interesting findings. GHB use is still considerably low to that of other recreational drugs such as cannabis, XTC or cocaine. In the Netherlands, GHB is relatively often used at home, while in Flanders it is mainly used in clubs. A sharp increase in addiction treatment indicates that GHB in the Netherlands can be considered a ‘problem drug’. Similar characteristics of addiction clients of both countries are age, gender (male), high unemployment, and co-use of stimulants. GHB is not a drug that is used exclusively by highly educated, well-integrated, clubbers, but also by groups of lower social economic status. Therefore, GHB deserves special attention, both in terms of prevention and addiction care.
Notes
