Summary: Implementing multidimensional family therapy in Western Europe

Henk Rigter

Implementation is hard work. There is no way to develop an implementation model for a treatment program that could be uniformly used all over the world. Implementation has to be re-designed in each individual country. If you think doing a randomized controlled trial takes all your energy, try international implementation. International collaboration can speed up implementation. This paper is about the implementation of MDFT in Europe, and especially the Netherlands. It is a success story, but tainted with blood, sweat and tears. MDFT is a treatment program for adolescents with substance abuse and other problem behaviour. It works well in Europe, despite all differences in treatment culture and referral policies. MDFT is here to stay.
