Summary
Numerous studies interventions for return to work have been developed and evaluated for workers with mental health problems, often in employee populations. This current study evaluated a diagnostic intervention in which an early intervention (Psyon Verzuimanalyse, PVA) was conducted among self-employed workers who filed for disability benefits due to mental health problems. Evaluated outcomes were duration until first reduction of disability percentage and duration of disability claim. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with a follow-up of 12 months. The intervention group contained N=41, the control group N=47. The duration until first reduction of disability percentage was on average 49.3 days shorter in the intervention group (p=0.009). The mean difference in duration until claim closure was 63.2 days, in favour of the intervention group (p=0.056). The diagnostic PVA intervention might contribute to the early start of treatment and thus may lead to a shortened duration of the disability claim.
