Samenvatting
Doelstelling
Nagaan of parachutes een doeltreffend middel zijn om ernstig letsel in relatie tot het tarten van de zwaartekracht te voorkómen. Opzet Een systematische review van gerandomiseerde en gecontroleerde vergelijkende onderzoeken (RCT’s).

Medline, Web of Science, Embase, en de Cochrane Library databases; geschikte internetsites en citatielijsten.
Selectie van onderzoeken
Studies die de effecten van parachutegebruik tijdens vrije val nagaan.
Voornaamste uitkomstmaat
Dood of ernstig letsel, gedefinieerd als een letselscore >15.
Resultaten
We konden geen enkel RCT over parachute-interventie vinden.
Conclusies
Zoals bij veel interventies die tot doel hebben om ziekte te voorkomen, is de effectiviteit van parachutes onderworpen aan een grondige evaluatie met gebruikmaking van RCT’s. Voorstanders van evidence-based medicine hebben kritiek geuit op de inzet van interventies die uitsluitend zijn geëvalueerd met observationele onderzoeksgegevens. Wij zijn van mening dat iedereen er voordeel bij heeft indien de meest radicale voorstanders van evidence-based medicine een dubbelblinde, gerandomiseerde en placebogecontroleerde crossover trial van de parachute zouden organiseren en er ook aan zouden deelnemen.
