Summary
In the present study, the validity of the support domain of the Vragenlijst Arbeid en Re-integratie (VAR-2) has been investigated in a sample of 703 subjects from the working population. The hypothesis has been tested that an imbalance between stressors and support is related to an increase in symptoms. The results confirm this hypothesis. In the case of equal levels of stressors, the amount of symptoms depends on the level of support. The results also suggest that a good balance at home protects one from job strain. However, support at work only helps manimally to protect one from stressors in the private life. Finally, fatigue turns out to be less sensitive to the buffering effect of support than anxiety and depression. Insight in the balance between stressors and support may be motivating for the employee on sick leave.
