SAMENVATTING

Dit artikel betreft een onderzoek naar de positie van de bedrijfsarts in Nederland, in het bijzonder rond de toegankelijkheid en onafhankelijkheid, preventieve taken en samenwerking met andere professionals. Uit de uitgevoerde enquête onder 514 bedrijfsartsen komt naar voren dat bedrijfsartsen en arbodiensten weinig ondernemen om de bekendheid van de bedrijfsarts (persoon en taken) onder werknemers te verbeteren. Een minderheid van de bedrijfsartsen geeft aan niet altijd geheel onafhankelijk te kunnen werken. De respondenten ervaren een beperkte ruimte tot preventief advies aan werkgevers en werknemers over werkgebonden risico’s, leefstijl en vitaliteit. In de samenwerking met andere professionals verloopt met name de samenwerking met de verzekeringsarts en casemanager niet altijd optimaal. Op basis van dit onderzoek kan worden geconcludeerd dat de positie van de bedrijfsarts bij een externe arbodienst kwetsbaarder lijkt dan die bij een interne arbodienst of die van de zelfstandige bedrijfsarts.

Part 2. Viewpoints of the professionals themselves

A study has been carried out on the position of the occupational physician in the Netherlands, focusing especially on accessibility, independence, preventive tasks and collaboration with other professionals. This article presents the results of a questionnaire survey among a representative group of 514 occupational physicians.

Most companies offer employees free access to the occupational physician, but it appears occupational physicians and occupational health services (OHS) undertake little to inform workers properly about the occupational physician’s role and tasks. A relatively small number of occupational physicians indicate not always to be able to work completely independently either due to the attitude of employers and employees or pressures and expectations to the contracting occupational health service. The respondents experienced time constraints in advising workers and employers about work-related risks, lifestyle and vitality. The collaboration with, in particular, social insurance physicians and case managers (dealing with sickness absence management) is not always optimal. This study also shows that the position of occupational physicians working in an external OHS (out-company OHS, working for various employers) seems more vulnerable than the position of physicians working in an in-company OHS or independent occupational physicians. Solving the identified shortcomings should be a shared responsibility for the professionals, the organizations of employers and employees and government.
