Summary
Guideline under construction: ‘Balancing physical ac tivity and diet at the workplace’
Overweight and obesity are increasingly prevalent in the Dutch population, accompanied by high costs, sickness absence and chronic disorders. A thorough literature review (BRAVO review) showed there are a number of effective and feasible lifestyle interventions aimed at the prevention of overweight. Occupational health physicians (OHPs), however, rarely apply these interventions, mainly due to a lack of practical methods and materials. The NVAB Centre of Excellence, in cooperation with the Department of Public and Occupational Health of the VU University medical center, is developing a new guideline for occupational physicians: ‘Balancing physical activity and diet at the workplace’. The guideline is part of the project Balance@Work. The aims of this project are to develop a guideline for OHPs aimed at stimulating physical activity and improving dietary behaviour, to study the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of this guideline, and to implement the guideline in the occupational health and safety practice.
The project has three phases: (1) Development (2008): formulating the guideline according to the NVAB guideline development process combined with the Intervention Mapping protocol. (2) Practical test (2009–2011) in a randomized controlled trial involving 20 OHPs and – so far – 500 employees. Measurements are performed at baseline and after 6,12 and 18 months, using questionnaires and health assessments. The most important outcome measures are lifestyle and physical measures, together with general health, quality of life, cardiovascular disease risk, sickness absence and costs. (3) Publication (2011): the results will become available in the form of a guideline tested for effectiveness and cost-effectiviness. The BRAVO report is already digitally available and there are several informative websites.
