Al ruim een eeuw geven kauwgomfabrikanten in reclames hoog op van de (vermeende) voordelen van hun producten voor de dentale en orale gezondheid. Nu beweren ze dat gom ook de denkprestaties van de kauwer verhoogt.

Alvorens in Groningen tot doctor in de geneeskunde te promoveren, studeerde hij industriële vormgeving, geschiedenis, taalwetenschap en psychologie. Hij doceert aan de New York University.
